Any requests from the peanut gallery?

As many of you know, the schedule of workshop topics has been consistent over the years.

Every so often a new one may be added, an old one taken away. But buy-and-large it has been consistent.  This is so everyone can attend them all.  Miss 'Internet Basics, Pt. 1: Tech and Terms' this month? Don't sweat it, it'll be back next month.

Ohhh, but woe unto thee that has attended them all! Besides the plethora of knowledge, you would have gained, there is nothing new to learn! You don't even get an' I attended every CareerLink® virtual workshop and lived to tell the tale' Commemorative T-shirt!

Well, my dear friends, I am open to requests. Is there a topic you would like me to present that I have not covered yet? A 'special guest' (within reason - I cannot swing getting Taylor Swift to co-host, try as I might) you would like to talk to and plumb the depth of their knowledge? Keep in mind it should relate to some aspect of improving your career/job prospects.

And let's be real - that is an extremely broad category. Any form of self-improvement can relate to your job performance. Technology, transportation, education, incarceration, inflation, and childcare are just a few topics.

If you think of one that others can also profit from, send me an email and I will check into it. I can always schedule a 'special' workshop that may not be on our normal calendar of events but pops up as a 'special event'.

Remember, we are here to help you. So let me know how, workshop-wise, I can do that.

Peace

A chicken in every pot and Internet in every house. If I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times: The internet has now become a mandatory utility needed for business and civic engagement in today's society.  Unfortunately, the status of internet importance has surpassed the availability of fast, reliable, and affordable internet for everybody.  For many, they need it but they can't get it. In other words, we have put the cart before the horse. This discrepancy is what we down on the ol' techno farm call 'the digital divide'.  There is some hopeful news on the horizon to deal with this. Pennsylvania has received over $1,000,000,000, (yes - that's  BILLION) dollars to close the 'digital divide'. Overseeing this massive plan is the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority. Here is the short version of what they are all about: Goals and Objectives : Universal Access : Ensure all residents have access to high-speed internet that meets or excee...

Great moments in Internet security - who knew?

In my last post, I mentioned distributing flyers about all the great stuff we offer at your local CareerLink®. My goal was to get the word out that we are MORE than just a place you have to go when you are unemployed. Needless to say, we are a GREAT place to go if you are unemployed, but...   That's not all we do, as demonstrated by the large variety of workshops we offer. I have found, within the last year or so, that there is an extreme interest in learning some more of the basics of everyday technology, such as basic computer skills, and basic internet skills. So I am also starting a fun and freaky series of internet security tips that promote technology training services for those who feel left behind by the exponentially expanding reliance on using computers and the internet.  So take a look at one of them. Stay tuned, more historical characters will e tossing in their two cents worth of cyber security wisdom soon. Who knew these concepts are over a hundred ye...
Just when I thought the 'February blah's' had started to take their toll, a glorious gift was bestowed upon me - 12 spankin' new Dell computers for my classroom! Yessiree bob - the old tower computers have been retired, along with their 'retro' Windows 8 and MS Office 2016 software. (good by old friends, you have served us well). In their place are tiny little Dell OptiPlex computers, sporting Windows 10 (not ready to test Windows 11 yet) and the newest MS Office apps. Obviously, we are wired up to fast ethernet connection to cruise the light fantastic on the internet. Now you may say "ok Scott, that is groovy and all. But why should I be doing a jig about this?" Well, my amigo's, although I would never dis my own virtual presentations, sometimes you need hand-on instruction to learn certain technical skills. Try learning to play a guitar by watching videos and not HAVING a guitar. Get it? If you need some basic computer or internet skills, want to...
